Sealants

Many people have deep grooves (known as pits and fissures) in their teeth. These grooves can also develop over time. Pits and fissures make you more prone to cavities and tooth decay, as they are harder to clean than flat, level teeth.

What are Sealants?

Sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to molars and premolars. They cover over pits and fissures, protecting against tooth decay.

What Does Getting Sealants Entail?

The sealant will be painted onto the tooth and should harden naturally or with help from a special curing light. Sealants only take a couple of minutes per tooth to apply.

Reasons for Sealants:

• Baby Teeth: If the child has deep grooves and is prone to cavities, this procedure may be considered.
• Children and Teens: Sealants are often added after the six-year molars come in, to protect teeth during the cavity prone years of 6-16.
• Adults: If you have tooth surfaces with deep grooves or depressions, but no decay, then sealants may be a great protectant.
